The story follows Beth and Ellie, two sisters who have grown apart over time. They are forced to fight for their survival when bloodthirsty demons emerge from an ancient book, plunging them into a primitive fight for survival. The plot is full of twists and turns.
Originally slated for release on HBO Max in 2022, Evil Dead Rise will now be hitting theaters on April 21, 2023 due to a change in studio strategy and positive test screenings. This change is not unique to Evil Dead Rise, as House Party, Magic Mike's Last Dance, and Blue Beetle were also initially intended to debut exclusively on HBO Max. Similarly, Smile, a horror movie released by Paramount last year, was originally planned as a Paramount+ original before positive test screenings convinced the studio to opt for a theatrical release, which ultimately proved to be a wise decision.
The film will have its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival on March 15, 2023.
