The popular character Dexter Morgan from the TV series Dexter was inspired by a real-life murderer. The show follows a charming serial killer who works as a blood analyst for the police in Miami. The story was first written as a novel called Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay in 2004. It was later adapted into a 12-episode season in 2006, and the show continued for eight seasons, with a spinoff called Dexter: New Blood.

Even though Dexter was based on a real murderer, it is still considered a work of fiction. The character Dexter Morgan seems far-fetched, but surprisingly, there are similarities to the real-life inspiration. Both Dexter and the real-life killer, Pedro Rodrigues Filho, have unique moral codes that led them to use their dark sides for revenge and what they believed to be justice.

Pedro, also known as the "South American Punisher" and the "Brazilian Dexter," was a notorious serial killer in Brazil. He began killing criminals and gang members when he was between 14 and 19 years old, just like Dexter. Both Pedro and Dexter lost their loved ones and sought revenge by killing those responsible. Pedro killed a gang after his pregnant girlfriend was murdered, while Dexter avenged the death of his wife by hunting down and killing the Trinity Killer.

Pedro's killing spree began when he shot the mayor of a Brazilian city at the age of 14. He joined a gang and was forced to kill members of rival gangs. After his girlfriend's murder, he took it upon himself to hunt down and kill the rival gang members. Pedro admitted to murdering over 100 people, including around 40 while he was in prison.

Pedro served a total of 30 years in prison between 1973 and 2003 and another prison sentence from 2011 to 2018. Surprisingly, he became a famous YouTuber and TikTok star after his release. He was shot and killed in a drive-by shooting in March 2023, and the case remains unsolved.

Dexter's code only allows him to kill murderers and serial killers, while Pedro expanded his targets to include drug dealers, rapists, and gang members. Dexter never got caught, served time in prison, or became a YouTuber. Unlike Pedro, Dexter also had expertise as a blood splatter analyst and worked for the police. These details were added to make Dexter's character more interesting. Dexter was born and raised in Florida, not in Brazil like Pedro.

Despite their differences, the dark nature and unique ethical stances of both Pedro and Dexter inspired the captivating TV series, Dexter.
