Creating a Unique Sith Lord: A Star Wars Cosplayer's Journey
A skilled Star Wars fan who loves dressing up as characters from the movies decided to create a new character for her cosplay. She wanted to be different and chose to become a Zabrak, the same species as the popular villain Darth Maul. Zabraks have sharp horns and special tattoos that make them look fierce.
The cosplayer, named Missy, created a unique character named Xane Vandul. Xane Vandul is a female Zabrak who has her own style and wields two red lightsabers. Missy thought it would be cool to have a female Zabrak because there aren't many in the Star Wars universe who have the same facial tattoos as Darth Maul. Xane's outfit is similar to the clothing worn by a group called the Nightsisters, and her twin lightsabers might be a tribute to another character named Asajj Ventress.
The tattoos on Darth Maul's face have different explanations in the Star Wars stories. In the current canon, Maul got his tattoos when he was a baby, which was a tradition for Zabraks from a planet called Dathomir. In the older version of the Star Wars stories, the tattoos were given to Maul by his master, Darth Sidious. Other Sith, like Darth Krayt and the One Sith, also had similar tattoos.
If the creator of Star Wars, George Lucas, had been in charge of the sequels, he might have included a character named Darth Talon who was part of the One Sith. Darth Talon could have been Maul's apprentice and might have had Sith tattoos like him. However, this didn't happen in the official Star Wars canon.
The tattoos on Maul and other Zabraks have become iconic in the Star Wars universe, and many talented cosplayers, like Missy, bring these characters to life through their costumes.
