Greg Nicotero, a visual effects expert, was part of the show from the beginning. Before each season, he held a "Zombie School" to find the best actors to play the zombies. He looked for people who looked thin and sickly, with the right bone structure. The actors also had to bring the zombies to life by their performance.

While it's important to show the humanity of the walkers, it's also necessary to make them scary. It's not as easy as it seems to be a zombie on the show. It requires acting skills and the ability to convey terror and threat.
