The Super Mario Bros. Movie earns over $1 billion in less than a month since release
The Super Mario Bros. Movie, produced by Nintendo and Illumination, has earned over $1 billion in less than a month since its release, becoming the first movie of 2023 to join the billion-dollar club. It has earned $532.5 million from international markets and $490 million from the US and Canada. The movie is Illumination's third animated film to achieve this milestone after Despicable Me 3 and Minions. It has also become the highest-grossing video game movie, surpassing Warcraft. The film is the first major children's movie release since December 2022, and its success is partly attributed to nostalgia and the lack of competition in the market.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is an animated feature film directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, starring Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, and Jack Black as Bowser. The movie is an origin story of two Brooklyn plumbers who are transported to the Mushroom Kingdom, where they team up with iconic Nintendo characters to save Princess Peach from Bowser. The film has received mixed reviews from critics, with a 59 percent average critics rating on Rotten Tomatoes, but audiences have given it a 96 percent score.
Nintendo's creator, Shigeru Miyamoto, hinted that the company plans to produce more adaptations based on its characters. The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently showing in cinemas worldwide.
