The highly anticipated trailer for Martin Scorsese's new movie, "Killers of the Flower Moon," has been released. The film, produced by Apple, is based on a book called "Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI," written by David Grann and recognized as one of the top non-fiction books of 2017 by Time magazine.
The story takes place in the 1920s and revolves around the Osage Nation, a Native American tribe that was forced to relocate to Oklahoma in the 1800s. The Osage Nation became wealthy after oil was discovered on their new land. Mollie Burkhart, a member of the Osage Nation played by Lily Gladstone, married a white man named Ernest Burkhart, portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. Outsiders could only gain access to the Osage Nation's wealth through marriage, leading to a series of murders targeting wealthy Osage Native Americans.
Mollie Burkhart's family members were among the victims of these murders, which caught the attention of the newly formed FBI. J. Edgar Hoover, the FBI director at the time, assigned Tom White, a former Texas Ranger played by Jesse Plemons, to investigate the crimes. The film's trailer has finally been released after much anticipation.
It's interesting to know that Leonardo DiCaprio initially intended to play the role of Tom White but opted to portray Ernest Burkhart instead, considering it a more complex character. Robert De Niro plays the role of William Hale, Ernest's father and a rancher. The screenplay for "Killers of the Flower Moon" was written by Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese, with Bradley Thomas and Dan Friedkin as producers. The movie also features a diverse cast, including Tantoo Cardinal, Cara Jade Myers, JaNae Collins, Jillian Dion, William Belleau, Louis Cancelmi, Tatanka Means, Michael Abbot Jr., Pat Healy, Scott Shepherd, Jason Isbell, and Sturgill Simpson.
The film will premiere at the Cannes Film Festival and is scheduled to be released in theaters on October 6, 2023, just in time for awards season. It is based on a highly acclaimed book and tells the story of the Reign of Terror, a series of brutal murders targeting the oil-rich Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma.
