Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) Returns After Ban, with Trial Period and Adjustments

Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI), a popular battle-royale game, is making a comeback in India after being banned last year. The Korean publisher Krafton has received permission from the Indian government to resume operations. The game was removed from app stores due to privacy and security concerns, impacting the mobile e-sports scene in the country. BGMI is the first app to return among the many banned by the government.

Krafton expressed gratitude to the Indian authorities and the gaming community for their support and patience. They announced that BGMI will be available for download soon and are excited to welcome players back. The game achieved significant milestones in India, attracting over 100 million users within a year of its launch.

After the ban on PUBG Mobile, BGMI, an India-specific version, gained popularity and revitalized the e-sports ecosystem. It hosted various official and unofficial events, including a televised tournament called the 'Masters Series' on Star Sports 2, won by Global Esports. Krafton emphasized its commitment to complying with regulations and promoting responsible gaming practices.

However, there are reports suggesting that BGMI's return may be a trial period of three months, with the government closely monitoring its activities. The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) wants to ensure compliance with rules and regulations. The game is expected to have adjustments, such as a time limit on gameplay and changes to gore effects. Previously, players could change the color of blood, but this may now be set as a permanent/default option.

In March, another game called Dead by Daylight Mobile was removed from Indian app stores by MeitY. No specific reason was given, but it could be related to the involvement of the Chinese firm NetEase, which distributed the game in Southeast Asia, Japan, and Korea. The Indian government has previously banned several Chinese apps due to security concerns.

There is no official release date yet for BGMI, but it is expected to be available on Android and iOS like before.
