Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC Details Leak: New CPU Cluster Layout, 64-Bit Support, and More
Qualcomm's upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, codenamed Lanai or Pineapple, is expected to have a new CPU cluster layout featuring a 2+3+2+1 structure with two new, unannounced CPU cores named ARM Hunter and Hunter (ELP). This will be Qualcomm's first chip to have a "Titanium" cluster, which is currently unclear how it will differ from the "Gold" cluster. The chip is expected to launch in late 2023, possibly during Qualcomm's annual Summit in Hawaii, and will likely only support 64-bit computing, removing all 32-bit support. The GPU in the upcoming chip is said to be the Adreno 750, and it will run on version 6.1 of the Linux kernel with Android 14. It is uncertain if the chip will arrive in phones this year or in 2024.
Previous rumors suggested that the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC could launch early this year and receive a 25% performance bump. However, it is now possible that Qualcomm might skip a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 model and directly release its successor. If the company follows its past launches, we may also see a Snapdragon 8+ Gen 2 SoC as a mid-year refresh with improved thermal performance and power efficiency. The leaked details come via a Twitter thread by Kuba Wojciechowski, who claims that the next-gen chip will have the model number SM8650.
