Elden Ring Receives Ray-Tracing Update and Major Expansion Announcement

Elden Ring

Elden Ring has received its ray-tracing update with patch 1.09, available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series S/X. However, the update is limited to ray-traced shadows and ambient occlusion, with no options for Nvidia DLSS or AMD's upscaling options to improve frame rates. Ray-traced reflections are also absent, and the visible changes are only outdoors, eliminating glowy edges on nearby rocks. The PS5 update is larger at 5GB due to precompiled shaders, while the PC update is 200MB and requires shader installation on first launch. The patch also brings several balance adjustments to the game, and FromSoftware has announced the first major expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, for all platforms.

Bandai Namco confirmed that Elden Ring had sold over 20 million copies since its launch in February 2022. Players collectively died over 9 billion times, and attempted boss battles nearly 6 billion times. The figure riding Torrent in the expansion teaser art is assumed to be Miquella, brother to Empyrian goddess Malenia, who was cursed to remain a child forever. Elden Ring is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series S/X, but the ray-tracing update feature is not available on the PS4 and Xbox One versions.
