Michael Keaton's Batman Beyond Movie Plans Dashed After The Flash's Box Office Results
Fans who were excited about the idea of seeing Michael Keaton in a Batman Beyond live-action movie will be disappointed to learn that it's not going to happen. The possibility of the movie depended on the success of The Flash film at the box office. In The Flash, Keaton reprised his role as Batman after many years, playing a version of the character from a famous DC Comics storyline called Flashpoint.
Kevin Smith, a popular filmmaker, revealed that he had discussions with a family member of Michael Uslan, a longtime producer of Batman movies, about plans for Keaton's Batman Beyond after The Flash. However, the movie was contingent on The Flash performing as well as The Batman did during its opening weekend. Unfortunately, this didn't happen, and the Batman Beyond project with Keaton was scrapped.
This is not the first change of plans for Keaton's Batman after The Flash. Initially, it was believed that Keaton's return would set him up as the main Batman in the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), replacing Ben Affleck's portrayal. There were also rumors that he would have a similar role to Nick Fury in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Keaton did participate in another DCEU project, the Batgirl movie, which would have been connected to The Flash. However, Warner Bros. Discovery canceled the Batgirl film even though filming had already finished, depriving audiences of another opportunity to see Keaton as Batman.
Although a Batman Beyond movie in the DCEU seems unlikely, there is still a possibility for DC Studios to pursue it as an independent project. This way, Keaton could return as Bruce Wayne and mentor Terry McGinnis in a separate continuity that doesn't interfere with other DC Universe plans. Fans remain hopeful that a Batman Beyond live-action project will eventually happen in some form, despite the setback caused by The Flash's performance.
