Apple is looking to diversify its supply chain beyond China, with India emerging as a potential alternative
Apple is seeking to diversify its supply chain from China as it faces challenges from Covid-19 lockdowns and rising geopolitical tensions. India is a potential alternative as it offers a growing domestic market and a massive, cheap labor force. Foxconn, a top Apple supplier, is also looking to expand its operations in India after suffering severe supply disruptions in China. Apple has redoubled its efforts to invest in India, with its CEO, Tim Cook, calling it a "hugely exciting market" and a "major focus". India is set to overtake China as the world's most populous country, with a growing consumer base and expected to remain the fastest growing major economy in the world in 2023. The Indian government has implemented policies to attract investments in mobile phone manufacturing, and India already accounts for 16% of the global smartphone production, while China constitutes 70%. Samsung, the world's top-selling smartphone brand, has already successfully diversified away from China by making a lot of its phones in India, which now accounts for 20% of Samsung's global production. However, analysts say it will take time for India to fully deliver on its potential as a supplier for Apple, as it has taken China nearly two and a half decades to develop its electronics manufacturing ecosystem.
