DC Universe's New Chapter: Supergirl Movie Aims to Succeed Where Superman Failed

The DC Universe is starting a new phase called "Gods and Monsters" with animated and live-action TV shows and movies that will be connected. One of the upcoming projects is a Supergirl movie, which aims to succeed where Henry Cavill's Superman failed. James Gunn and Peter Safran are now leading the DC Universe and are planning to create a cohesive universe across different forms of media. While some characters from the previous DCEU will return, others will be left out to move the DC Universe forward.

Henry Cavill's Superman won't be part of the DC Universe anymore, and instead, a younger Superman will be featured in a movie called Superman: Legacy. Another important film in the new chapter is Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, which has a better chance of achieving what Cavill's Superman couldn't. The DCEU began in 2013 with Man of Steel, where Superman faced General Zod and made a controversial decision to kill him, leading to inconsistencies in his character's portrayal.

Man of Steel focused too much on Superman's origins and neglected his human side, making the character less relatable to the audience. The attempt to make Superman darker didn't work well, as it deviated from the traits that make him a beloved superhero. Cavill's version lacked a consistent tone and failed to capture the essence of Superman.

Despite the failure of Cavill's Superman, the decision to make Supergirl darker in her upcoming movie is justified. The film will be an adaptation of the comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, written by Tom King. The story explores Kara's trauma and has darker moments, providing a consistent tone for the character. By basing the film on a comic book, the storytelling issues faced by Cavill's Superman can be avoided.

Supergirl has a smaller fanbase compared to Superman, which lowers the expectations for her adaptations. The comic book source material will help maintain a coherent story and tone, allowing Supergirl to avoid the issues that plagued Cavill's Superman. The DC Universe aims for more cohesion, and Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is one of the most promising projects that has the potential to surpass what was done with Superman in the DCEU.
